Teknatool International is a wholly owned NZ company with deep roots in the country. Started back in 1955 as general engineering company, in the late 1970's it began making its own NOVA branded DIY/woodturning machines. It began exporting these in 1980, beginning with Australia. Today, NOVA products are available in over 15 countries and is one of the most popular and recognised brands in Woodturning. In 2001, the Teknatool R&D team developed a DVR motor, primarily in response to needing a solution for NOVA products - a flexible motor that could handle a wide variety of voltages and deliver consistent torque. This motor has now been proven in over 6000 NOVA machines and we have recognised that this motor has much wider applications than the narrow range of woodturning and woodworking. We are now developing this motor to release into other machinery and applications, starting with those in Woodworking as that is our immediate area of competency. In 2006, the company recognised that it needed to move its manufacturing facility to be closer to its markets. It set up the Qingdao Teknatool Machinery Company, which is 100% owned by NZ Teknatool. Based in Qingdao China, this facility has recently become accredited supplier for brands like Black and Decker and is recognised for its outstanding quality. In 2009, Teknatool opened its 2nd facility in Qingdao, a business and R&D department seperate from its manufacturing facility. This office is based in downtown Qingdao. In 2010, Teknatool has gone into partnership to create a US distribution company, NOVA Tools USA. This company will give NOVA and other products a wider sales channel in the USA, one of the largest Woodworking markets in the world. Today, Teknatool International (NZ)
operates as the head office for its global facilities, with the head of
R&D, Design, Marketing and Sales and Financial control coming from this
